So I was flipping around the Guardian website, you know, like you do, and I found a video about an exhibition of 19th-century wax anatomical models, which were both used as teaching aids at medical schools and exhibited to the public.

Here is an old PSA for you -- don't worry, this one's not scary! Except maybe for the wig the actor playing Shakespeare has on. It is a textbook example of Shakespeare-as-signifier-of-Authorship-and-Letters (the ad, not the wig).

In my quest to traumatize my flist with international examples of advertising contributed for the public good, have some Canadian road-safety PSAs. They are not as traumatic as the mentally-scarring Ontario WSIB ads, but they are subtly unsettling nonetheless.

If you've ever wondered what anti-smoking PSAs would have looked like in the 17th century, search no longer (warning: kind of creepy; contains dangly parts).

I'm still not sure whether this is more or less unsettling than the old smoking fetus PSA though.
